Increasing Sustainability through Tolerance Allocation and Quality Control Strategies in High Precision Manufacturing - Application on Hydrogen Valves

Subject Area Production Systems, Operations Management, Quality Management and Factory Planning
Term since 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 568909480

EU-Sustainable Products Regulation based on new Eco-design Directive aims to substantially enhance circularity, energy efficiency, and overall environmental sustainability of products sold within the EU. Integrating environmental considerations into every phase of the product lifecycle plays a crucial role in reducing energy and resource consumption and improving quality in manufacturing industries. The convergence of advanced technologies and new data analytics provide real-time feedback for smart manufacturing process control and adaptive product development for parts tolerance allocation as key element, ultimately leading to improved manufacturing efficiency and reduced scrap rates by integrating principles of reusing and remanufacturing. A tradeoff between cost, quality, energy consumption and material aim to better meet the requirements. To achieve this, the production system will be expanded to reuse both scrap parts from linear production and components from field use. Challenges arising from the use of remanufactured components are addressed by means of intelligent pairing strategies and suitable testing and measuring procedures.
