Services -- Part of the Research Unit International Division of Labour (IdoL): New Challenges for Workers, Firms, and Policy Makers

Subject Area Economic Policy, Applied Economics
Economic Theory
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 550491480

This project explores how firms operate in a global economy increasingly defined by the integration of services, goods, and finance. Spanning three interrelated subprojects - services in global value chains, joint goods-services production, and the role of finance in multinational activity - this project develops new theoretical models and leverages rich firm-level data from Germany and Austria to study how services and financial relationships shape trade and investment decisions. Methodologically, the project combines structural modelling with quasi-natural experiments and matched firm-bank datasets to identify causal effects of trade policy and financial frictions. Together, these efforts aim to deepen our understanding of how firms respond to policy shocks, navigate market uncertainty, and integrate services and finance into global operations. As part of the newly founded Research Unit IDoL, this research will benefit from significant synergies with other projects within the unit. Specifically, it will gain valuable insights from the projects "Global Value Chains", "Superstar Firms", "Innovation and Technology", and "Taxation and Redistribution". Additionally, the "Data and Research Infrastructure" project will provide crucial input by collecting new data on "de facto" tariffs and offering support in data management.
