On the Ir(111)/graphene moiré cluster superlattices of a large variety of materials may be grown with high perfection and macroscopic extension. These supported, dense cluster arrays consist of epitaxial clusters with a narrow distribution of a tunable average size and considerable thermal stability resting on an inert, defect free substrate. These properties are unique and it is the goal of the present project to exploit the scientific potential of such graphene moiré based cluster superlattices It is intended to further develop the atomistic understanding of binding, structure, and formation of cluster superlattices and to investigate cluster diffusion, cluster dynamics, cluster isomer transformations as well as cluster-cluster interactions. We will explore new, simpler methods of cluster superlattice fabrication and create new types of cluster materials by embedding cluster arrays into a matrix. Finally, we will make use of the unique superlattice properties and investigate for selected materials the catalytic, magnetic, and electronic properties of such cluster arrays.
