A Raman microscope is installed at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, which is mainly used for research objectives in molecular chemistry. Raman spectroscopy is a sensitive method to characterize molecular vibrations in transition metal and main group element compounds. It is complementary to infrared (IR) spectroscopy and enables in particular the characterisation of symmetrical vibrations that are not visible by IR spectroscopy. In combination with computational chemistry, Raman spectroscopy provides insights into the (electronic) structure of (short-lived) compounds during stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. In addition to common structural elucidation, the spectrometer is coupled with electrochemical methods (SEC) in order to investigate solution processes induced by electrochemical oxidation or reduction in situ. Further, spectrometer is used to identify various short-lived O2 and N2-metal complexes in the field of (bioinspired) small molecule activation.
