The objective of this proposal is to acquire a state-of-the-art 5-Laser spectral flow cytometer for the high-parametric and high-throughput analysis of individual cells at the Institute of Medical Immunology at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, a Centre of Excellence of the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies. The acquisition of a spectral flow cytometer is a crucial component of the appointment of the new Director of the Institute of Medical Immunology at the Charité, where more than thirty research staff members from different groups work on basic and clinical immunology topics in the fields of innate immunity, immuno-deficiencies and chronic fatigue syndrome. As a core methodology in immunology, access to a state-of-the-art spectral flow cytometer is essential to support the institute’s numerous research projects—primarily supported by national and international funding agencies. These projects rely heavily on multiparameter analysis to identify and study rare immune cell populations and require continuous establishment and optimization of immunoprofiling and functional assays. The instrument, which will replace existing instrumentation purchased in 2011 that is outdated and needs to be decommissioned, will play a key role in fulfilling the institute’s mission to bridge mechanistic studies in humans and experimental models with clinically oriented research. Optimal use of the technology will be ensured by scientific and technical staff with deep expertise in flow cytometry, who have consistently advanced the field through the development and application of high-parameter assays. This is reflected in a strong publication record leveraging multiparameter flow cytometry in combination with other high-dimensional platforms.
