A 200 MHz / 4.7 T MRI-Magnet (MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging) from 1999 should be replaced together with accessories (Renewal). The magnet is currently used within the Instrumental Facility Pro2NMR at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT for MR imaging and diffusion studies at large magnetic field gradients. Research topics concern process monitoring and product studies, as the instrumental facility mainly addresses research questions in chemical and bio engineering. The new magnet will enlarge the established range of imaging and diffusion experiments by spatial and time resolved chemical characterization, especially as artifacts due to magnetic susceptibility differences are less pronounced at the magnetic field of 4.7 T compared to large magnetic fields. Chemical shift artifacts can in addition be handled more easily. The instrument, which is mainly used in engineering and life science, but also in research-oriented teaching of KIT, offers an extension of the NMR- and MRI-capabilities within the instrumental facility Pro2NMR at KIT apart from the necessary renewal of the equipment. It enables the continuation of and the start of the research projects sketched in section 3 of the proposal.
