6-DoF precision measuring system for measuring forces and torques on rotating wheels – sensor wheels

Subject Area Mechanics and Constructive Mechanical Engineering
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 580724629

The Institute for Mechanical and Automotive Design (iMAD) at RPTU in Kaiserslautern, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roman Teutsch, intends to use this funding application to procure sensor measuring wheels, including the associated data acquisition hardware and software, for conducting comprehensive automotive engineering investigations. Specifically, this involves a six-axis precision measuring system for recording vertical, lateral, and longitudinal forces as well as the corresponding moments on the rotating wheel of light to (medium) heavy (commercial) vehicles of various classes. The recording of these measured variables is a central component of modern vehicle development. As a renowned institute at RPTU in Kaiserslautern, the iMAD chair focuses specifically on (commercial) vehicle technology, which is a key technology area in Rhineland-Palatinate. The importance of this topic is underscored by the cooperation between several RPTU partners and affiliated institutes at the Center for Commercial Vehicle Technology (ZNT) in Kaiserslautern. The applicant's goal with this procurement is to support development in this area in a long-term and sustainable manner. A modular, adaptable system has to be procured that can cover a wide range of applications, particularly with regard to test vehicles; from light to (medium) heavy commercial vehicles and from wheel sizes in the 14/16“ range to wheel sizes of 28/30”. The mobile measurement technology is to be used primarily for setting up digital twins and developing methods for condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and estimating remaining service life, as well as for validating virtual sensor technology and real-time transfer models (metamodels). In the future, applications in the areas of driving comfort, driving dynamics and safety, vehicle efficiency, and tire-ground interaction are also conceivable.
