Project Details
mass spectrometer with electron impact ionization
Subject Area
Molecular Chemistry
Term
Funded in 2026
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 581771026
The application requests a high-resolution mass spectrometer with electron impact ionization (EI-MS) and a quadrupole orbitrap analyzer with a collision cell (HCD cell). Instruments with EI are also suitable for chemical ionization (CI). In CI (and EI for specific samples), the HCD cell is used for operation in MS/MS mode. The requested package also includes a module for liquid injection field desorption ionization (LIFDI), enabling inorganic research groups to reliably observe molecular ions from their air- and solvolysis-sensitive elemental and organometallic compounds. Operation of the LIFDI module also requires the HCD cell. In addition, a gas chromatograph enabling the measurement of GC-MS spectra is requested as a peripheral device. Furthermore, an uninterruptible power supply (USV) is requested to prevent damage due to unexpected voltage fluctuations and power outages, as well as sound insulation for the vacuum pump. The requested instrument will be used exclusively in research for the mass spectrometric analysis of organic and inorganic molecular compounds, typically novel synthetic products. GC-MS coupling is required to elucidate complex product or reaction mixtures in order to identify products and byproducts, which can, for example, serve reaction optimization or the elucidation of reaction mechanisms. MS/MS coupling is necessary to determine the structure (constitution) of unexpected and unknown compounds using CI.
