We study the control mechanisms that caused changes in the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) in the eastern tropical South Pacific under significantly different climatic conditions from the last Glacial to the pre-anthropogenic Late Holocene. This is a prerequisite to separate human-induced perturbations from those caused by natural climate variability. For this purpose we will on one hand reconstruct variations in OMZ intensity in its centre at highest time resolution for the past 5,000 years and on the other investigate changes in the sensitive suboxic OMZ margins for the past 20,000 years based on well-established redox-sensitive proxies.
