We focus on the experimental characterization of the recently discovered periodic-aperiodic interface of the quasicrystalline barium titanate phase on Pt(111). Stress and phonon measurements are planned to charac-terize the role of interfacial stress and of low-energy excitations for the formation of the quasicrystalline phase. Quasicrystalline barium titanate will be used as a template for the growth of ferromagnetic atomic layers to produce for the first time quasicrystalline multiferroic composites. This defines a new class on materials, where the role of symmetry and strain for magnetic anisotropy, magnetoelastic and multiferroic coupling will be elucidated.
