Multiscale seismic imaging of the San-Andreas-Fault system
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
We applied an innovative seismic imaging technique (Fresnel-Volume-Migration) to old industry seismic data in order to map large scale structures of the San Andreas fault system. Compared to previous studies on this reflection data set we were able to produce new seismic images of enhanced resolution and quality that reveal several structures that have not been imaged before. Although we have not been able to image steeply dipping structures at the San Andreas fault we were able to characterize the fault zone as a near vertical structure down to the deep roots of the crust. Our results also resolved tectonic structures within the Coast Ranges southwest of the San Andreas fault and the Great Valley east to the San Andreas fault. We have combined our results not only with previous results of the same data but also with microseismic event and NVT locations as well as results from magnetotelluric studies across the same profile. This yields some new interesting insights into the crustal structure and the dynamics of this major transform plate boundary.
