Reconstruction of the Hydrological Cycle in the Southern Transect of the Tibetan Plateau Utilizing Sediment Records

Fachliche Zuordnung Paläontologie
Förderung Förderung von 2008 bis 2016
Projektkennung Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projektnummer 69117873

The overall aim of this project is to reconstruct changes in the hydrological cycle indicating past monsoon variability in the southern and central part of Tibet All together four lake systems (Nam Co, Puma Yumco, Tangra Yumco and Mapam Yumco) along an E-W transect with different moisture supply related to strength and penetration of the monsoon will be investigated with subbottom profiling, core analyses and onshore mapping. By using hydroacoustic techniques submerged beach remains indicating a more negative water balance than today and faults pointing to seismic activity will be detected. In addition basin morphology, sediment distribution and sediment stratigraphy will be used to trace changes in the sedimentary pattern and to identify representative core locations. Geochemical, sedimentological and geophysical data derived from core analyses are part of the groups multiproxy dataset, with which we will show differences in the hydrological and sedimentary regime that are indicating changes in monsoon driven moisture supply. A detailed chronology for the cores will be established, enabling us to detect differences in the sedimentary history on a centennial scale.
