Merons and instantons versus monopoles and calorons: identifying the semiclassical pseudoparticle mechanism responsible for confinement and deconfinement

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term from 2008 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 72414775

The project aims at an identification of and a possible discrimination between recently developed scenarios for confinement based on standard pseudoparticle solutions (merons, instantons or Harrington-Shepard calorons) on the one hand and calorons with non-trivial holonomy on the other. We shall concentrate on zero-temperature and on nonzero-temperature confining as well as deconfining field ensembles in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory and/or full QCD. Special emphasis will be layed on the rôle of meron solutions, which have so far received much less attention than the other pseudoparticles. Systematic model computations within these scenarios will be confronted with lattice field theory investigations including various recently developed filtering techniques as there are smearing and mode expansions of the lattice Dirac as well as of the Laplacian operator.
