Models of microstructures and magnetic domains for magnetic shape-memory materials have been developed to provide a realistic description and means to calculate performance of such active materials that can change their shape under magnetic fields. Motivated by recent experimental observations and detailed analysis on the Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler and Fe-Pd magnetic shape-memory alloys, the continuation of the project extends theoretical approaches to model these materials as defected continua, where adaptive modulations appear as non-equilibrium, nanotwinned microstructures. An continuum approach making use of appropriate gauge theories of defects will be developed to model nanoscale martensitic textures. Magnetoelastic couplings of these defected continua will be formulated. The resulting models will be employed for numerical simulations on the formation and transformation processes of adaptive ferromagnetic shape-memory behaviour.
