Recent astrophysical discoveries such as dark matter , dark energy and neutrino oscillations indicate the existence of particles and interactions beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Theoretical extensions of the Standard Model need to be developed and their phenomenology must be analysed with regard to the consequences for accelerator experiments and astrophysical observations. In the next ten years, scientific breakthroughs are to be expected in these overlapping fields of research owing to a host of new experiments.
The Research Training Group aims at significant contributions to this progress on the theoretical side. By forming a cluster of competence and by concentrating on a coherent range of research topics, the Research Training Group is intended to attract excellent young scientists and to achieve international visibility. The cluster of competence is composed of the chairs in astronomy and astrophysics, elementary particle physics, and computational physics who are already engaged in productive cooperation. A professorship in applied mathematics with many years of research in numerical astrophysics completes the cluster. Own ideas and initiatives of the graduate students bridging the gap between particle physics and astrophysics will be fostered through joint dissertation projects, interdisciplinary advisors, joint classes and workshops and travels to promote scientific exchange.
Research in astrophysics and particle physics is organised and carried through in worldwide cooperation. The longstanding international contacts of the school s scientists and their participation in collaborations and workshops guarantee the international embedding of the Research Training Group. The international visibility will be strengthened by students spending several months abroad, by visiting foreign scientists and by integration in the International Research Training Group Würzburg.
We see a further reason for establishing a Research Training Group in the large number of beginners in physics at the University of Würzburg which lies far above the average number in Germany. The well-structured training programme proposed offers an outstanding possibility to the many students with an excellent diploma (or master degree) in physics to graduate in a topical and very promising area of basic research.
