Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Die Kommunikation zwischen Zellen ist eine essentielle biologische Funktion in vielzelligen Organismen. Während der Evolution haben sich prinzipielle Mechanismen der Zell-Zell-Kommunikation entwickelt, die dann eine Organ-, Gewebe- oder zelltypspezifische Anpassung erfahren haben. Ziel des Graduiertenkollegs war es, molekulare Mechanismen der zellulären Kommunikation und Signaltransduktion in Immun- und Nervensystem vergleichend zu untersuchen und Kollegiaten durch fachübergreifende Ausbildung zur Spitzenforschung auf diesem Gebiet zu qualifizieren. Das Kolleg stützte sich dabei auf das Potenzial der vor Ort etablierten international sichtbaren Forschungsschwerpunkte Immunologie/Molekulare Medizin der Entzündung und Neurowissenschaften. Es umfasste Hochschullehrer aus den Fakultäten für Medizin und für Naturwissenschaften der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität sowie des Leibniz-Instituts für Neurobiologie. Die interdisziplinäre Forschung zur molekularen Interaktion von Zellen des Immun- und des Nervensystems wurde dadurch am Wissenschaftsstandort Magdeburg gestärkt. Die Grundlagenforschung des Kollegs wurde darüber hinaus durch Projekte mit medizinisch-klinisch relevantem Hintergrund ergänzt, die die molekularen Mechanismen pathophysiologisch aberranter Zell-Zell-Kommunikation und Signaltransduktion erforschten. Das Studienprogramm, das die Forschungsarbeiten in den Projekten begleitete und vernetzte, verfolgte das Ziel einer umfassenden Befähigung zu selbstständiger wissenschaftlicher Arbeit auf dem Gebiet molekularer und zellulärer Fragestellungen in den Neurowissenschaften und der Immunologie. Die Verwandtschaft der in den Projekten benötigten Methoden und Technologien stellte ein zusätzliches synergistisches Element in Ausbildung und Forschung dar. Schlüsseltechnologien wie Massenspektrometrie, Bildgebende Verfahren und Bioinformatik wurden für alle Projekte gleichermaßen vorgehalten. Das Kolleg diente insgesamt als Kristallisationspunkt und Integrationselement für die Kooperation der beteiligten Forschungsschwerpunkte und unterstützte die internationale Spitzenforschung auf den Arbeitsgebieten vor Ort.
