Tailored cutting edge microgeometries lead to a significant enhancement of the cutting tool performance and increase its tool life. Yet, it is so far not possible to analyze the resulting effects of the applied cutting edge microgeometry without conducting expensive experimental tool life tests. One reason for this is the incomplete understanding of the influence of the cutting edge design on the plasto-mechanical processes in the shear zones. The main objective of this research work is to achieve a fundamental understanding of the material deformation processes in the shear zones within cutting operations while adapting the cutting edge design. Furthermore, the influence of the consistency of the hone on the thermomechanical load of the wedge and the resulting wear behavior will be studied. Additionally, the influence of the workpiece material properties on the load profile on the cutting edge will be considered. Conducting specific experimental cutting operations as well as FEM-Simulations will lead to the aimed main goal of this work.
