This project will elaborate the nannofossil biostratigraphy of the Quaternary to late Neogene sedimentary successions retrieved during IODP Expedition #315 from the Nankai Trough subduction zone off Japan. During Exp. #315 two sites were drilled into the Kumano forearc basin as pilot holes for future riser drilling. The proponent was invited to the mentioned drilling expedition as nannofossil biostratigrapher to provide a framework for sedimentation history of the forearc basin. In addition, biostratigraphic information derived from various fossil groups, magnetostratigraphic records and tephra stratigraphy will be integrated to reconstruct the accretionary prism and forearc basin evolution. Moreover, emphasis will be laid on the evaluation and applicability of common nannofossil biostratigraphic events in the Nankai Trough area. For this purpose the timing and characteristics of all available nannofossil biostratigraphic events from the Nankai Trough will be compared with established nannofossil biohorizons from other areas of the world.
