Endemic birds as indicators of human impact and environment change: comparative biogeography and landscape ecology of East-Pacific island systems

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The out-lined research plan previously presented to the German Research Foundation (DFG) was successfully realized. Three months of field work in different regions of Mexico were conducted from mid- February to late March in 2009 and 2010. Data were collected by field work or literature search regarding all study areas: Mainland Mexico, Chamela Reserve; Coastal Marias Islands, 100 km off the mainland; Oceanic Revillagigedo Islands, 550-1000 km off the mainland. Fortunately all field work units were conducted without serious problems / inquiries. Therefore at the end of the stay time was left. This offered the opportunity to add another study site / bird population to the research plan. The fourth study site was: Coastal Isabel Island, 30 km off the mainland (Nayarit). Data were collected according to several thematic complexes: bird ecology, biogeography, biodiversity, habitat use. Thus data were collected according to several endemic and nonendemic species and subspecies of birds. Through the collected data for the first time a comparison of these study areas according to biodiversity of birds became possible, and a first publication is submitted to a peer review journal. As one overall aim is the comparison of southern Pacific and northern Pacific island systems, recent publications dealing with the Biogeography and ecology of birds from the Chilean Juan Fernandez Islands are added in this report, although these related field surveys were not funded by the German Research Foundation. In the list of publications the scientific output is given since the year funding.
