Elaboration of the interface mobility approach for structure-borne sound source characterization

The lack of a widely accepted approach for structure-borne sound source characterization causes substantial problems in engineering practice. Noise and vibration control is severely hampered. In particular, the industrially commonly desired lead-time reduction is effectively prevented by the lack of proper tools at the design stage. Thus, a top priority research task is the development of a proper method for the characterization of vibrational sources which would provide the engineer with absolute source data and physical insight. For this task, the concept of interface mobilities offers a physically and numerically consistent platform. In this proposal, the concept of interface mobilities will be elaborated scientifically and technologically with a view towards a physically underpinned, practically satisfactory approach for the characterization of vibrational sources. The significance of high-order power terms needs to be clarified, the contribution of cross-component coupling has to be investigated and an extended approach is required for cases where the cross-order terms are not negligible. Processing these three tasks would greatly contribute to the understanding of the transmission process and constructively pave the way for a development of a practically satisfactory approach for source characterization.
