It is the aim of our project to analyze the role of human innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in hepatic fibrogenesis. To this end we will analyse alterations of the hepatic ILC pool in liver diseases of different aetiology and study how this relates to progression to liver fibrosis (Task I). These studies will provide the basis for the planned in vitro studies which aim at analysing the cross-talk of ILCs with hepatic stellate cells, the mechanisms involved in these interactions and how these are affected by the surrounding microenvironment (Task II). Finally, we will study how alterations of the intestinal ILC pool in liver disease may contribute to progressive hepatic inflammation and fibrogenesis (Task III).
