This proposal outlines relevant steps in the development of a model coupling strategy designed to bridge the gap between process based denitrification modeling and landscape scale transport. The overall aim is to design a catchment modeling framework in a way to facilitate the general coupling of other models as well, for example to simulate pesticide fate, erosion, or eutrophication processes. Three goals are identified that will be worked on during this project proposal: (1) Prior to communicating the new model structure we want to discuss the model design and its practicability with key experts. (2) The numerical methods for the integration of the subsurface system has to be checked to increase the computational efficiency and the numerical stability of the model. (3) The model has to be verified against measured discharge data, water path way information and mean residence times. The work will be conducted in a cooperation visit to Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, US.
