Charge transfer from solids to aqueous solutions underlies important chemistry. While prior studies show that all aspects of the interface influence electron transfer rates, experimental insight into mechanism has been limited. Here we initiate electron transfer with femtosecond optical excitation and tracking the correlated structural changes, principally using several types of sum frequency spectroscopy, as the electron moves from solid to liquid. In particular we will elucidate the role of non-bonded interactions in controlling chemistry using 2D vibrational techniques.
