We propose systematic investigations to control electronic quantum well states and the organisation of coadsorbed species using self-assembled supramolecular templates. Highresolution scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy will be employed to characterize the surface topography and electronic structure, in particular regarding the confinement of the 2D surface state nearly free electron gas at close-packed noble metal substrates Nanochemical strategies will be explored with superlattices of distinct symmetry (1D gratings and nanoporous 2D metal-organic networks fabricated with zwitterionic and metal-directed assembly, respectively). The resulting surface electronic properties will be analyzed in depth with both local and integral probes to develop a rationale in this field. Moreover, the indirect electronic interactions mediated by the substrate will be used to arrange single atoms and molecules in different templates, including the orientational order of rod-like molecules and the alignment of magnetic adatoms.
