In the second phase of the project, subproject P6 will continue to be focused on the quality of virtual acoustic environments. For this purpose, we will first investigate the nature, the stability and the temporal behaviour of inner auditory references as a constituent element of judgements about the quality of virtual environments. A series of listening tests will be performed to determine just memorable differences for different auditory qualities as well as the temporal decay of auditory images, marking the transition from the episodic to the semantic memory.Second, we will determine requirements for an authentic and plausible representation of natural acoustical sound sources such as speakers or musical instruments, as well as strategies for their implementation in room acoustical simulations in cooperation with subproject P2. This includes a representation of the source directivity with the perceptually required accuracy as well as its temporal modulation due to source movements or varying radiation patterns over time.In cooperation with subproject P5, we will investigate the influence of the reproduction room on the quality of virtual environments based on sound field synthesis with loudspeaker arrays. This includes the physical domain, by including the reproduction room into room acoustical simulations, while the perceptual impact will be determined by using the Spatial Audio Quality Inventory (SAQI) developed in phase one.For the future development of room acoustical simulation, we will create a ground truth of monaural, binaural and array-based measurements in different rooms with precisely documented primary and secondary structure in cooperation with subproject P2. These will be applied for a 'round robin on auralization in order to document the current state of the art in room simulation. Finally we will use virtual environments as stimuli for the development of a quality metrics for natural acoustic environments, based on the SAQI attributes as preliminary work, along with a ground truth database consisting of a large number of virtual acoustic environments and their perceptual evaluation to be used as a basis for future research on room acoustical parameters beyond ISO 3382, both for the audience and the stage perspective.
