GSC 1085: Karlsruher Schule für Elementarteilchen- und Astroteilchenphysik: Wissenschaft und Technologie (KSETA)
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Die Karlsruher Schule für Elementarteilchen- und Astroteilchenphysik: Wissenschaft und Technologie (KSETA) ist die Graduiertenschule des KIT-Centrums Elementarteilchen- und Astroteilchenphysik (KCETA). Die Schule umfasst die Forschungsgebiete Elementarteilchenphysik, Astroteilchenphysik und moderne Technologien. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Schule ist die gemeinsame Forschung junger Doktorand(inn)en aus Physik und Ingenieurwissenschaften an Großgeräten der Elementarteilchen- und Astroteilchenphysik. Dieses Konzept baut auf der zentralen Stärke des KIT auf und stärkt diese gleichzeitig: KIT verbindet das lebhafte akademische Umfeld einer Universität mit der Infrastruktur eines nationalen Forschungszentrums. Ein wichtiges Charakteristikum der Schule ist die internationale und multikulturelle Arbeitsumgebung, die wir unseren führenden Beteiligungen an den Großexperimenten AMS, Auger, Belle-II, CMS, EDELWEISS, IceCube und KATRIN ebenso verdanken wie der großen Zahl ausländischer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler im KIT-Zentrum KCETA. Das Leitmotiv der Schule ist, die Promovierenden an internationalen interdisziplinären Großprojekten optimal für Berufswege in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft auszubilden. Bewerbungsvoraussetzung ist ein Master in Physik, einer Ingenieurwissenschaft oder Informatik. Unser Qualifizierungsprogramm hat das Motto "Tiefer • Breiter • Besser”: Erstens bietet es den Promovierenden die bestmögliche Spezialausbildung ("Tiefer"). Zweitens baut es Brücken zwischen Promovierenden in Physik und Ingenieurwissenschaften und so eine solide Basis für ihre gemeinsame Forschung ("Breiter"). Drittens werden mit einem breiten Angebot die persönlichen Fähigkeiten und sozialen Kompetenzen unserer Absolventinnen und Absolventen gefördert ("Besser"). Die KSETA Topical Courses on Physics and Technology werden hauptsächlich als halbjährlich stattfindende Blockkurse angeboten, was zeiteffizient ist und die Gewinnung erstklassiger externer Dozentinnen und Dozenten erleichtert. Insgesamt wurden bisher 90 Kurse angeboten, davon 20% in der Kategorie „Tiefer", 52% in der Kategorie „Breiter" und 28% in der Kategorie „Besser". Andere Elemente des KSETA-Ausbildungsprogramms sind zwei jährlich stattfindende Workshops mit externen Dozentinnen und Dozenten und Präsentationen der Promovierenden, Gelegenheiten für gemeinsame Forschung mit wissenschaftlichen Gästen oder ausländischen Sommerstudierenden, Unterstützung von Konferenzreisen sowie Überbrückungsfinanzierungen als Postdoc für eine kurze Zeit nach der Promotion. Die Schule umfasst derzeit 43 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler und 123 Promovierende. 28% der aktuell Promovierenden absolvierten ihren Masterabschluss im Ausland. Im Berichtszeitraum wurden 167 Doktorarbeiten fertiggestellt. Davon wurden 20% von Frauen erstellt, während nur 15% der Masterabsolventen im Fach Physik weiblich sind. 48% aller Promovierender (Alumni und aktuelle Promovierende) arbeiten in der Teilchenphysik, 33% in der Astroteilchenphysik und 19% in Ingenieurwissenschaften (Elektrotechnik und Maschinenbau) oder Informatik. Die KSETA Doctoral Fellows sind Koautoren von mehr als 450 Artikeln in referierten Fachzeitschriften.
