Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The research reported herein was motivated by the widely observed fact that for communication systems transmitting in the non-asymptotic regime with limited delay constraints, a separated design of the source and channel encoders is not optimum and gains in complexity and fidelity may be obtained by a joint design strategy. The joint source-channel coding approach we chose to follow is based on the application of low-density parity-check codes as both source and channel codes. Descriptions of such systems could already be found in the literature by the time we initiated our investigations. However, their error-rate curves presented very high error floors making their application in practical systems unattractive. In order to mitigate such a drawback, we proposed a novel system where the amount of information about the source bits available at the decoder is increased by means of an improvement in the connection profile between the factor graphs of the source and channel codes that compound the joint system. Furthermore, we proposed the application of shortened low-density parity-check codes to the syndrome-based source encoding as an strategy to mitigate the error floors we detected in some of the performance curves of the system we developed. The results obtained show that we successfully managed to improve the performance of joint source-channel coding systems based on low-density parity-check codes for a wide range of source entropies and channel conditions. Moreover, these same results suggest that the systems described herein have a strong potential to be applied in the context of distributed source coding with side information at the decoder and to systems which make use of joint source-channel coding operating in the finite-length regime.
