Integrated Research Training Group "Cell-Fate Decisions in the Immune System" (MGK)

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2013 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 210592381

In the second funding period of the CRC1054, the integrated research training group (IRTG) once again represented an effective and powerful tool to provide a structured framework for training and supervision of doctoral candidates in life sciences and medicine. CRCs face increasing international competition with other forms of structured graduate programs for the best doctoral candidates. By providing tailored qualification measures for young immunologists, the IRTG aims to increase the visibility and attractiveness of the CRC1054. This is reflected in the recruitment of a multinational young faculty. Besides excellent students from Germany, the CRC also hosted outstanding young scientists from Brazil, Greece, India, Slovenia, Taiwan, Poland, Italy, Chile, Japan, China, Turkey, Colombia and the USA. Some of the training activities of the IRTG, such as the bi-weekly lecture series, are open to the public and are extremely well received far beyond the CRC-funded young faculty. Thus, they provided a unique platform for networking and exchange of ideas and know-how among doctoral candidates and postdocs in the field of immunology in the greater Munich area. The provision of travel grants for external lab visits was instrumental in acquiring technological skills not available within the CRC. Along the same lines, funds for external workshops were successfully used to provide a ‘tailor-made’ training for doctoral candidates according to specific and individual needs. In sum, the IRTG continues to provide a substantial added value to the entire consortium.
