Generalized Real Flag Varieties and Buildings

The goal of the proposed research is to determine the fundamental group of the subgroup of elements fixed by the Cartan-Chevalley involution of a real Kac-Moody group. This is achieved by studying the fibration over an embedded subgroup of rank 2, leading to a cover of the corresponding generalized real flag variety. We also want to investigate the existence of string groups in this context by studying the higher homotopy groups.
