Understanding and correcting for systematic effects are essential to successfully pursue a next-generation experiment aiming to measure the neutron EDM to 10-28 e*cm. This proposal outlines a course of action to improve this understanding through the development of simulation, data acquisition and analysis systems for the next-generation neutron EDM experiment at the FRM-II in Munich. The ultimate goal of the simulation effort is to provide a comprehensive numerical framework in which arbitrary electric and magnetic field distortions may be studied to determine their effect on a final neutron EDM measurement. Such a simulation will also contribute to experimental design efforts by providing magnetic cleanliness requirements for critical components, and will eventually be used to provide estimates of systematics by using magnetic characterization data of commissioned experimental pieces. The data acquisition system will combine several sub-systems in a unique approach. Control and monitoring software will be implemented in a layered fashion, combining a view layer, a database layer and a control layer. The view layer, or user interface, will be written using JavaScript and HTML to establish portability and simplicity, and will funnel transactions with the control layer through a database layer to allow persistence of both data and command sequences. Finally, the development of the analysis system will focus on the synthesis of data to remove systematic effects to extract a neutron EDM measurement. In particular, it will aim to harness the wealth of data available in this next-generation approach, using improved co-magnetometry, data from environmental stability monitoring, and estimates from combined characterization data and simulation to reach a measurement goal of 10-28 e*cm.
