The development of Syrian Palace-ResourceCultures (A04)
Subject Area
Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
Term
since 2013
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 215859406
The project deals with the significance of resources for the socio-political and cultural development of Syria's palace systems during the Middle and Late Bronze Age (2000 - 1200 BC). Research has so far defined the Syrian palace systems primarily as economically functioning households, i.e. as 'palace economies' or oikoi. In contrast to this previous concept, the project will investigate how these states also used resources for the construction of power, political ideology, cultural identity and social integration as well as for the consolidation of interregional communication and internal and external networks.
