Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey - Germany (CILS4EU-DE)

Subject Area Empirical Social Research
Term since 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 244760921

The “Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU)” is a long-term data infrastructure project that provides rich panel information on the life courses and attitudes of adolescents and young adults with and without a migration background. It was launched in 2010 as part of the "NORFACE Research Programme on Migration" (funding 2009–2013) with representative samples of then 14-year-old adolescents in Germany, England, the Netherlands and Sweden. The German part of the study (CILS4EU-DE) has been further funded since 2014 as part of the DFG's long-term programme. Respondents were followed into early adulthood (26–28 years) during CILS4EU-DE. The third three-year funding phase will end at the end of 2023 and we hereby apply for funding for the fourth, one-year phase from 1/2024 to 12/2024. The extension is intended to sustain the existing CILS4EU data infrastructure, which will continue to enable the international research community to conduct research at the highest level on a broad range of topics. After the last two official surveys of waves 8 and 9 and a special survey on the COVID-19 pandemic were conducted in the current funding period, the existing survey data are to be enriched with additional information in the funding period now applied for. (1) First of all, geo-referenced matching variables are to be created over time to allow external users to access geographical context information. This will be possible up to the NUTS-3 level. (2) We will continue to work on the harmonisation of CILS4EU and NEPS data from Starting Cohort 4. The work for the international CILS4EU student dataset from waves 1–3 has been completed, and the parent and teacher questionnaires from CILS4EU and NEPS waves 1–3 will be added in the new funding period. In addition, data from CILS4EU-DE starting from wave 4 will be harmonised with later NEPS waves. (3) We plan to use administrative data from the IAB Research Data Centre to supplement the CILS4EU-DE survey data with information on employment that is subject to social security contributions. This will open up new analytical possibilities for the structural integration of young adults in the German labour market. In addition to these three core tasks in the last funding year, we will continue to offer user support, conduct meet-the-data courses, and organize a final conference. Finally, we will also pursue important questions in the context of our own research. These include, for example, integration into the labour market after ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful transition decisions in the education system. We will also examine the role of regional dialect in the integration of people with a migration background in the labour market.
