The project aims to highlight the role of German academics of Jewish origin in the disciplinary history of archaeology and Oriental Studies and simultaneously to present (the history of) Egyptology as an exemplary case study for the history of science in general.Following on archival research in Bremen, Leipzig, Vienna and Cairo and after the analysis of further sources held in archives in the US, the material will be incorporated into the existing voluminous manuscript, with due consideration of concurrent research and recent secondary literature. Scholarly publications by the applicant, both already published and in press, contribute to this process of multidisciplinary exchange of views with other scholars at colloquiums and lectures. The successful completion of the project, according to academic standards, requires a thorough synthesis of the research conducted and material compiled to date, making the prolongation of funding for the project by the DFG for another year highly desirable.
