The research project is based on the PhD thesis of the applicant. It will seek to draw a comparison between the bonifica integrale (Agro pontino, 1927 until 1939) in Fascist Italy and the Ostpreußenplan (1934 until 1935) in National Socialist Germany at the landscape planning level and urban planning level as well as in the fields of architectural history and socio-cultural history. Of particular interest is the meaning of inner colonization or Regionalism which was forced in both totalitarian states. The comparison of symbolic projects in Fascist Italy and National Socialist Germany will be extended to projects of landscape planning and settlement planning, furthermore on rural industrialization projects in the USA in the 1930s concerning the New Deal. The consideration of dam plans in Francoist Spain during the 1950s will bring the research back to Europe.
