My proposition is for funding the scientific coordination of a publication project on the history of conflict resolution in Europe in form of a compendium. The intended volume will comprise 192 articles and around 2300 pages. Funding will be covering the project in its final phase.Co-editors of the publication will be, apart from me, PD Dr. Peter Collin (Frankfurt/M), Prof. Dr. Wim Decock (Leuven) and Dr. Anna Margarete Seelentag (Frankfurt/M). Ours is one of the few major projects in the field of legal history carried out in recent years involving notable representatives of adjacent disciplines. Its innovative approach is twofold: (1) institutions, procedures and rationalities of conflict resolution will be contextualised synchronically from a conflict-centered perspective. (2) directions and ruptures of developments from antiquity up to 20th century Europe will be diachronically visualised.A scientific coordination of the single contributions is of central importance to the coherence of the complete work. Therefore this task has to be carried out, funded by the proposed project resources, by a person appropriately qualified and well acquainted with the project. The project's character is a special one in so far as the scientific task does not consist in individual research. Rather, the following assignments will be attached to the proposed position:1) close coordination of the single contributions with regards to content;2) composition of the introductory article to the antiquity chapter as well as preparation and coordination of three further introductory articles to the medieval, early modern and modern chapters;3) preparation of the overall introduction;4) revision and terminological coordination of around 50 articles that will have to be translated into German from foreign languages;5) establishment of a register, in cooperation with a student assistant also proposed for.The overall introduction will offer a scientifically grounded presentation of the project's underlying conception, whereas the introductory articles to the chapters on antiquity, medieval times, early modern times and modernity will assemble central results of the corresponding single contributions and present them in form of a synopsis. It is vital that the editorial work as described will be supported by a student assistant, especially in technical matters, for whose position I also propose funding. The short project phase of 15 months, for which funding is proposed, is identical with the decisive phase of coordination and conclusion of the project, which has by now progressed to an advanced state. The single contributions are already being composed. With Springer a renowned publishing house could be acquired for publication, which voiced positive expectations of sales figures. Springer is also considering an online publication and a translation of the volume into English. Thus, the project's broad effect and wide range visibility are guaranteed.
