Role of microRNAs as modulators of microglial function in neurodegeneration (B03)

Subject Area Molecular and Cellular Neurology and Neuropathology
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 259373024

The project’s aim is to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms of microglial activationtriggered by microRNAs that directly bind to immune receptors. The ability of such microRNAs toregulate microglial function and to enable intercellular communication in the central nervous system(CNS) will be determined. As part of this, the microRNA sequence and structure required for immunereceptor activation will be analyzed. Using different mouse models of CNS injury, we will explore therole of distinct microRNAs acting as signaling molecules in neurodegeneration. Finally, themicroRNAs’ potential as biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases will be evaluated.
