Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Eine der größten Herausforderungen in den Neurowissenschaften besteht darin die grundlegenden Mechanismen der Entstehung neurodegenerativer und psychiatrischer Erkrankungen zu verstehen. Zur Entschlüsselung der Prozesse, die der Hirnentwicklung und der neuronalen Dysfunktion bei Krankheitsprozessen unterliegen, verfolgte das Zentrum für Mikroskopie im Nanometerbereich und Molekularphysiologie des Gehirns (CNMPB) einen translationalen Ansatz basierend auf revolutionären Entwicklungen in der Mikroskopie. Unser Ziel: neue diagnostische und therapeutische Strategien zur Prävention und Behandlung dieser Erkrankungen zu entwickeln. Grundlage für das Exzellenzcluster war das im Jahr 2002 gegründete DFG-Forschungszentrum für Molekularphysiologie des Gehirns (CMPB). Dieses wurde 2006 durch das Exzellenzcluster für Mikroskopie im Nanometerbereich erweitert und als CNMPB in der letzten Verlängerungsphase beendet. Das CMPB/EXC/CNMPB hat die akademische Forschungslandschaft in Göttingen maßgeblich beeinflusst und signifikant zur Gestaltung eines integrierten und interdisziplinären neurowissenschaftlichen Campus beigetragen. Dieser vereint Wissenschaftler der Universität, Universitätsmedizin Göttingen, zweier Max-Planck-Institute, des Laser Laboratoriums Göttingen und des Deutschen Primatenzentrums. Befördert wurde diese Entwicklung durch die Einrichtung von Schlüsselprofessuren in übergreifenden Forschungsfeldern. Internationale Sichtbarkeit haben CNMPB Wissenschaftler durch 1075 peer-review Publikationen in anerkannten Fachzeitschriften erlangt. Hervorzuheben ist die Auszeichnung von CNMPB Sprecher Stefan Hell mit dem Nobelpreis für Chemie in 2014 für die Entwicklung der Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) Mikroskopie und deren Anwendung in lebenden neuronalen Geweben. Das CNMPB diente als Katalysator für die Etablierung interdisziplinärer Graduiertenprogramme, insbesondere in der Biophysik und den Neurowissenschaften. 108 Doktorarbeiten wurden absolviert, 9 Nachwuchsforschergruppen etabliert, etliche junge Wissenschaftler dazu befähigt, in attraktive akademische Positionen und Professuren aufzusteigen und zahlreiche Forschungsverbünde mit CNMPB-Beteiligung eingerichtet. Eine wichtige Verstetigungsmaßnahme war der Bau des Center for Biostructural Imaging in Neurodegeneration (BIN, 2014). Nicht zuletzt waren 16 Jahre CNMPB-Forschung Basis für die erfolgreiche Beantragung eines neuen lebenswissenschaftlichen Zentrums im Rahmen der Exzellenzstrategie des Bundes und der Länder. Im Januar 2019 hat das Göttinger Exzellenzcluster ‘Multiscale Bioimaging: From Molecular Machines to Networks of Excitable Cells’ seine Arbeit aufgenommen.
