In typical midland catchments in moderate climate, groundwater flow in floodplains is mainly down-valley oriented. However, the hydrological functioning of floodplains is also linked to the presence or absence of major hydrogeological features, and depends on the connection of the local groundwater systems to different floodplain margins. The goal of this project is to elucidate the hydrogeological drivers that determine water and solute fluxes across and control the redox reactivity at floodplain margins. We determine the relative importance of the margins to the overall fluxes and solute turnover in the floodplain by geophysical and hydrogeological techniques. The results are a prerequisite for the interpretation of physical and biogeochemical data and feed into the stochastic groundwater models.
