The electron-donating capacity of floodplain aquifer sediments acts to attenuate the concentrations of redox-active pollutants, such as nitrate, thereby reducing inputs of electron acceptor- and contaminant-rich water during large precipitation events. However, the heterogeneous structure of the subsurface and the dynamic nature of environmental forcings limit our ability to reliably capture biogeochemical turnover in-situ. The overarching goal of P4 is to quantify the denitrification capacity of, and the mobility and bioavailability of glyphosate in the Ammer floodplain Tufa aquifer with respect to in-situ reactivity. The latter will be achieved via biostimulation field-experiments under a forced-gradient flow-field. By coupling field-experiments to analog lab experiments and reactive transport modeling approaches, the project aims to capture the Tufa aquifer’s response to periodic (dynamic) influxes of contaminants and electron acceptors. Ultimately, the project will determine the biogeochemical conditions and timescales at which denitrification and glyphosate biodegradation occur.
