Improvement and identification of mechanical properties in forged parts by immediate post-forming after hot forging on different temperature levels by influencing microstructure of tempering steel

Subject Area Primary Shaping and Reshaping Technology, Additive Manufacturing
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 359921546

In the proposed project, the microstructure of forged components should be influenced by different aspects of forging process. Furthermore these influences will be classified by evaluating typical material properties. On one hand the effect of dynamic recrystallization during the deforming process will be used to refine the microstructure, on the other hand a second deforming operation will be used to apply a thermomechanical treatment. By this combination an ultra-fine gained microstructure should be reached in the exanimated tempering steel in parts manufactured by massive forming processes. Grain refinement improves strength and toughness as well. To obtain reliable values of comparable mechanical properties of the deformed and treated material, standardized tests will be carried out. The results will be shown additionally in comprehension with results of conventionally manufactured parts.
