The Transatlantic Research Training Group (Berlin - New York) seeks to accomplish the following goals:
-- Stimulate interdisciplinary and comparative research on major European and American 20th century cities as well as investigating questions related to contemporary metropolitan areas. New York and Berlin serve paradigmatically as key cities and discursive departure points in this undertaking. Differentiating insights will be gleaned from other major cities. In addition to Berlin and New York, Chicago, Frankfurt, Belgrade, Sofia, Vienna, Los Angeles and Tokyo are currently being investigated.
-- Drive an attractive, results-oriented development of new research talent in the field of metropolitan studies. Within the two spacious, shared offices at the Technical University Berlin, the school s scholars are engaged in concentrated work across disciplinary borders. The academic programme consists of interdisciplinary seminars, excursions, workshops and conferences with international experts as well as project-oriented research colloquia.
The following are to be the school s fundamental academic principles: co-advising (doctoral dissertation coaches in Berlin and New York); co-teaching (shared seminars with colleagues from Berlin and New York in both cities); an obligatory period spent abroad for fellows at the school s universities (min. three months); lecture series with rotating hosts and doctoral colloquia; regular annual conferences and workshops as well as events organised independently by the fellows.
-- The Transatlantic Research Training Group seeks to establish sustainable cooperation between universities, wants to support common projects across disciplinary borders and aims to encourage a transatlantic dialogue, which creates strong working relations and research cooperations on the base of common cognitive interests, which have developed and been intrigued by intensive dialogue across the Atlantic.
