GRK 1037:  Tunable Integrable Components in Microwave Technology and Optics, TICMO

Subject Area Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
Term from 2004 to 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 374837

The target of the Research Training Group is interdisciplinary training for graduate students (doctoral candidates) within the framework of an innovative research programme dealing with "Tunable Integrated Components in Microwave Technology and Optics". Interdisciplinarity, one of the major goals of the Research Training Group, is guaranteed by the presence of supervisors from the departments of electrical engineering and information technology, physics, material science and chemistry.
The central idea of this research-based PhD programme is to bundle together and focus diverse research groups in different departments in this innovative research field, in order to exchange ideas, to initiate collaboration between the multidisciplinary research groups and to use synergy effects, thus supporting the interdisciplinary training of the PhD students.
Tunable or frequency-agile components have a major and extensive operational potential in communication and sensor systems. Such systems include phased-scanning antennas for radars and automotive sensors, frequency-agile (software-defined) radios, e.g. of mobile communication systems, or tunable filters for channel selection in optical high-speed transmission systems. The functionality of these components is based on "agile" materials and micro-electronic or micro-optical mechanical systems. The electrical, magnetic or micro-geometric characteristics of these tunable devices can be manipulated and controlled by external electrostatic fields or dc voltages or currents.
