Project Details
GRK 1045: Modulation of Host Cell Functions to Treat Viral and Bacterial Infections
Subject Area
Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term
from 2004 to 2013
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 375188
The Research Training Group aims both to support the training of young scientists and to contribute towards basic research at the medical faculties at the Universities of Bochum, Düsseldorf and Duisburg-Essen. The goal of this intervarsity graduate course is to establish a methodical and thematic collaboration between the Universities in the Rhine-Ruhr area. Thus, a school of expertise is being created in the science of infectious diseases in the Rhine-Ruhr area.
After completing an intensive basic course in immunology, the twelve PhD graduate students at the various institutes are to work on their theses in different projects dealing with themes in immunmodulation and signaltransduction of infections. New strategies are being developed for the intervention of acute or chronic infections in which the focus of therapy is not the pathogen itself but rather the function of host cells or cells of the immune system. The animal models at these institutes allow the study of the courses of infections with different pathogens and the development of new forms of therapy. The close collaboration of this project enables the PhD students to become acquainted with different infection models. The ongoing series of lectures on immunmodulation held during the four semester period as well as the practical experience gained provides the post-graduates with a solid academic training in the fields of immunology and molecular biology.
