The exact functional implications of nucleoid presence in synaptic mitochondria remain poorly understood. We will systematically characterize presynaptic mitochondria with and without nucleoids, analyze mitochondrial mRNA localizations, and investigate the mechanisms promoting synaptic enrichment of nucleoid-containing mitochondria. Ultimately, we aim to understand and quantify the molecular mechanisms driving the structural and functional adaptation of mitochondria to the demands of their presynaptic environment.
