The role of RNA in synapse physiology and neurodegeneration (B06)

Subject Area Molecular Biology and Physiology of Neurons and Glial Cells
Biophysics
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 317475864

There is ample evidence that RNAs are localized at synapses, both mRNAs and non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs. A number of findings also suggest that shuttling of RNA amongst neural cells, and processes such as dynamic RNA modification via N6-methyl-adenosine-methylation (m6A), play a role in controlling synaptic plasticity. We will continue our study of these phenomena during the second funding period, focusing on the healthy and diseased brain, in both Parkinson and Alzheimer Disease models.
