The planned project is closely affiliated to the working program and targets of the R/V “Maria S. Merian” expedition to West Greenland in the summer 2007. The work program of the R/V “Maria S. Merian” expedition focuses on seismic profiling in the fjords and on the shelf, collection of marine sediment cores, and onshore geodetic measurements along a west-east transect in order to reconstruct the deglaciation history, the coastal development, and environmental changes during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. Within the scope of the project applied for here the working program of the R/V “Maria S. Merian” expedition shall be extended by onshore activities in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS, Denmark) and the University of Durham (UK). The main objective of the planned onshore activities is the collection of lake sediment sequences along altitude transects in outer, central, and inner Nordre Strømfjord in order to complement the information obtained by the marine geological investigations. Thus, a better understanding of the regional pattern of ice movements, relative sea-level changes, and climate evolution, and of the related reasons, can be achieved.
