Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Wissenschaftliches Rechnen – die Wissenschaft von der Entwicklung mathematischer und rechnergestützter Methoden zur Lösung von Anwendungsproblemen – wird als eine Schlüsseltechnologie des 21. Jahrhunderts angesehen. Hohe Erwartungen an Modellierung, Simulation und Optimierung, die Datenflut durch hochauflösende Bildgebung und Hochdurchsatz-Experimente, die Kombination von daten- und prozessorientierter Modellierung sowie die entstehende Nachfrage aus Forschungsfeldern jenseits der Naturwissenschaften stellen dabei Herausforderungen dar, die nur durch entsprechende methodische Fortschritte bewältigt werden können. Das Interdisziplinäre Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR) bearbeitet diese Forschungsfragen seit Jahren erfolgreich als zentrale Forschungseinrichtung der Universität Heidelberg. Die Graduiertenschule HGS MathComp ist nun eine unabhängige Forschungseinrichtung der Universität Heidelberg mit der Bestimmung als zentrale interdisziplinäre Ausbildungsstätte für Doktoranden. 50 Arbeitsgruppen mit 25 Jahren Erfahrung in der strukturierten Doktorandenausbildung bildeten die wesentliche Grundlage für eine erfolgreiche erste und zweite Förderperiode. Es gibt in Wissenschaft und Industrie eine anhaltend hohe Nachfrage nach jungen Wissenschaftlern mit einer sehr guten Ausbildung in den Methoden des wissenschaftlichen Rechnens und deren Anwendung. Die HGS MathComp deckt diesen Bedarf mit einer strukturierten Doktorandenausbildung, die in ein interdisziplinäres Forschungsumfeld eingebettet ist, welches die Entwicklung von neuen und leistungsfähigen Methoden fördert. Das wissenschaftliche Kursprogramm wird durch Schlüsselkompetenzkurse ergänzt, welche Fähigkeiten vermitteln, die von zukünftigen führenden Wissenschaftlern erwartet werden. Vorträge auf internationalen Tagungen und Forschungsaufenthalte im Ausland dienen der frühen Integration in die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft. Ergänzt wird dies durch internationale Gastwissenschaftler und ein Gastdoktoranden-Programm, welches in einem Netzwerk von Partnerinstitutionen eingebettet ist. Ausgehend von mehr als 250 erfolgreichen Promotionen und derzeit etwa 100 hervorragenden Doktoranden wird die Graduiertenschule nun eine permanente, unabhängige Einrichtung werden, welche ihre Angebote, gemeinsam mit den Partnerinstitutionen und der Graduiertenakademie, weiterführt und weiterentwickelt. Ermutigt durch die bereits erzielten Erfolge in beiden Förderperioden wird sich die Schule weiterhin darauf konzentrieren, Möglichkeiten für universitätsweite, interdisziplinäre Kooperationen zu erschließen und somit ihrem Auftrag als brückenbildende Institution gerecht zu werden. Eine integrierte, forschungsorientierte Master-Phase trägt zur forschungsbasierten Lehre der Gesamtuniversität bei und der internationale Master-Studiengang ‘Scientific Computing’, welcher an der Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik etabliert wurde, erlaubt eine maßgeschneidertensaustausch zwischen Industrie und Hochschule ist durch die etablierten Modellierungstage und das sehr erfolgreich Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing sichergestellt. Der ausgereifte Nachhaltigkeitsplan stellt die langfristige Perspektive der HGS MathComp als eine herausragende interdisziplinäre Einrichtung sicher, die fest in der Universität und der internationalen Forschungsgemeinschaft verankert ist.
