EXC 294: BIOSS Zentrum für Biologische Signalstudien - von der Analyse zur Synthese
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Wir leben in einem Informationszeitalter und die Informations- oder Signalverarbeitung ist auch von fundamentaler Wichtigkeit für die Entwicklung und das Erhalten von zellulärem Leben auf unserem Planeten. Das Zentrum für biologische Signalstudien BIOSS strebt nach einem besseren und tieferen Verständnis der Mechanismen und Funktionen biologischer Signalsysteme. Mit seiner Arbeit versucht BIOSS Antworten zu der 7 Grundfragen der biologischen Signalforschung zu finden, nämlich: Wer ist beteiligt und interagiert mit wem und was ist das Ergebnis eines Signalprozesses? Wie ist der Signalmechanismus und wo finden Signalprozesse statt? Wann entsteht es und wie lange dauert ein Signal und wie stark muss ein Signal sein um eine biologisch relevante Antwort auslösen? Die BIOSS Forscher suchen Antworten dieser Fragen mittels einer neuen Forschungsstrategie „von Analyse zur Synthese“, welche die biologische Signalforschung mit den Ansätzen und Methoden der Synthetischen Biologie verbindet. Das interdisziplinäre Forschungsprogramm von BIOSS umfasst 5 Fakultäten der Universität Freiburg, sowie zwei extra-universitäre Einrichtungen. BIOSS hat in den letzten 11 Jahren 130 Forschungsprojekte gefördert. In der zweiten Förderperiode hat BIOSS mit „nanoscale membrane signalling“ und „oncogenic signalling“ zwei neue Forschungsfelder etabliert. Die Produktivität der BIOSS Signalforschung wird durch jährliche ca. 200 Publikationen dokumentiert. Mit dem Signalhaus Freiburg hat BIOSS ein neues Forschungsgebäude an der Universität Freiburg etabliert, in welchem die Infrastruktur von BIOSS, wie das BIOSS Office, die BIOSS Toolbox und die BIOSS Signalfabrik, beheimatet sind. Zusätzlich verfügt das Gebäude über Laboratorien für das Studententeam, das jedes Jahr im iGEM Wettbewerb teilnimmt sowie über Lehrräume für die verschiedenen Lehrprogramme, wie „biology meets engineering“. BIOSS konnte die meisten seiner strukturellen und wissenschaftlichen Ziele umsetzen. BIOSS unterstützte die Arbeit von 4 unabhängigen Posdocs sowie 8 Juniorgruppen und etablierte 9 neue Professorenstellen an der Universität Freiburg. Wie im Antrag versprochen hat BIOSS seine Professuren zur Hälfte mit Wissenschaftlerinnen besetzt und dadurch in den Berufungen „gender equality“ erreicht. Mit seinen erfolgreichen Projekten und neu eingerichteten Arbeitsgruppen hat BIOSS sich sowohl national, als auch international als ein sichtbares, und erfolgreiches Zentrum der biologischen Signalforschung mit synthetischen Ansätzen etabliert. Vier der neuen Professoren arbeiten auf dem Feld der synthetischen und chemischen Biologie an der Fakultät für Biologie und zwei weitere jeweils an der Fakultät für Chemie sowie an der Fakultät für Medizin. Mit der Hilfe von BIOSS wird die Universität Freiburg jetzt national und international als ein Zentrum der biologischen Signalforschung anerkannt.
