Final Report Abstract

Klaus Mollenhauer (1928-1998) was one of the most important German educationalists of the 20th century, judging by the relevant research findings of academic research and our research into the reception of his works. In the forty-odd years of his academic career, he produced a large number of contributions that were generally well received in contemporary academic discourse. Already during his lifetime or shortly after his death, he was elevated to the status of a classic of educational science or social pedagogy, whereby he was – probably rather unintentionally – assigned a position beyond the current discourse, and a form of reception was promoted, which on the one hand leads to detailed reconstructive discussions of Mollenhauer's approaches and theoretical offers, while on the other hand the classic Mollenhauer is used as an argument without further specification of content. Thus, on the one hand, with regard to reprints and translations of some of his texts as well as more recent treatises on Mollenhauer, it should be noted that Mollenhauer has not been forgotten, but on the other hand, it should be noted that references to Mollenhauer's writings in recent discourse in educational science tend to be made selectively and sporadically as a blanket reference to a recognized professional authority rather than as a differentiated discussion. Mollenhauer thus seems to have suffered the fate of many classics: Their names and individual keywords associated with them - in Mollenhauer's case, for example, “emancipation”, “interaction”, “critical educational science” or “aesthetic education” - are occasionally mentioned, but there is hardly any further discussion of the content or any further development of the suggestions emanating from their works. Moreover, depending on the subject, topic and perspective of the authors, these publications each address slightly different facets of Mollenhauer's work. What they do have in common is that the development of Mollenhauer's educational thinking is divided into various more or less clearly defined phases (from „Geisteswissenschaftliche Pädagogik“ to critical educational science to educational science inspired by cultural theory) and subject segments (general educational science, social pedagogy, aesthetic education). Based on these considerations, a critical complete edition of Mollenhauer's works was compiled in the project, which on the one hand offers the opportunity to study the development of Klaus Mollenhauer's thinking in detail and in a differentiated way by examining his complete works, and on the other hand enriches research in the history of science on the development of educational science in Germany in the second half of the 20th century.
