Project Details
Fitness effects of cross-species gene transfer in bacteria (A05)
Subject Area
Metabolism, Biochemistry and Genetics of Microorganisms
Term
since 2018
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 325931972
The project characterizes the predictability of horizontal gene transfer from specific characteristics of its distribution of fitness effects (DFE). We will measure the DFE for transfer between Bacillus species using random barcoding technology, comparing different growth environments and evolutionary histories of the recipient. We will use the assay to explore mechanisms of transformation and their relative fitness benefits. Together, this project serves to predict speed and temporal order for different functional classes of adaptive transfers.
